Interview with Alyson Noel

Alyson Noel is a well known athor of many teen hits, including The Immortals series.  And Ms Noel took the time to answer my questions!

Were you expecting this kind of response when you were writing Evermore?  What were you expecting?

To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting anything. I was just writing the story I felt compelled to write, and crossing my fingers as I sent it off to my publisher—my usual routine!

If you could change anything in the story what would it be and why?

I wouldn’t change anything since I wrote the story I wanted to tell. Though if I could go back and start over I’d take much better, more detailed notes. I’ve had to go back and reread a few times just to catch up on all the little continuity details for the successive books.

You are the author of various teen novels, which one was your favorite to write?  And of course why?

They all resulted in different experiences, but if I had to choose, I’d say SAVING ZOË because it was sort of like a delirious fever dream where I wrote for hours on end, only stopping when my hands were all gnarled and cramped. For whatever reason, that story just came pouring out of me and I finished it in two weeks! Of course I then spent the next few months revising it . . . Also, the books in THE IMMORTALS series have been really fun, as I love writing about Summerland and spending time in that world.

What inspired you to write Evermore?

Grief. A few years ago I lost three people I loved in five months, and shortly after that I nearly lost my husband to leukemia (he’s in full remission now!). Experiencing that sort of intense grief and fear got me thinking a lot about life and death, mortality and immortality, the bonds that tie us even after a loved one is gone, and how our youth loving culture sort of seeks physical immortality by trying to remain youthful looking for as long as we can—and yet, what would happen if we really could achieve it? What would it mean for us, our loved ones, society in general?  And since I’ve been interested in all things paranormal since I was a kid, Ever and Damen’s story seemed like the perfect vehicle to explore all of those themes.

You said that you were going to be writing a book about Ever's sister, Riley.  What would the plot be about?

Riley is getting her own series set to debut in Fall 2010 and while I haven’t started it yet (though I’m about to!) it’s going to be about her life in the afterlife and I’m really looking forward to writing it!

Are any of you books going to be turned into a movie?

The dramatic rights for THE IMMORTALS series have been optioned by Spring Creek Productions, so we’ll see . . . and I’ve had some interest on some of my other titles, but since I’m a jinx-fearing person that’s all I’m going to say about that!

If there was something you could tell your past self what would it be?

Oh, so many things! But mostly that a change in attitude can change your whole life, that the biggest opportunity for learning and growth comes from the most difficult times, and that focus, determination, and positivity really do pay off!

The following questions are just some random questions, you don't really have to answer them :D

If you could fly to a planet which one would it be and why?

The Moon. I’ve been a moon watcher since I was a little kid!

If you could do something over what would it be and why?

I don’t like to look back with regret, I try to learn from my mistakes and move on, though I would love to revisit the moment I met my husband so I could enjoy that magical moment when our eyes first met all over again! Corny, I know!

Name something you are deathly afraid of.

That we’ll continue on this path of war, destruction, prejudice, violence, and hate and continue to make the same mistakes.

Something you are excited for.

The release of SHADOWLAND on 11.17.09!

In the book, Ever can see auras.  What would yours be....and why?

I’m aiming for white—perfect balance! But until then, I’ll settle for blue, violet, indigo, or pink!

And finally, any YA books you recommend?

I loved Lauren Baratz-Logsted’s CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL, and just got an early read of Tera Lynn Child’s FORGIVE MY FINS and loved it!

Shadowland is now available!  If you haven't read this series yet, I highly recommend you do!
