Jennifer Lawrence is Katniss Everdeen.

It's official, Lionsgate confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) will be playing Katniss Everdeen in the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games.

There is no use in denying the fact that she is beautiful, and obviously an exceptional actress (her Oscar nomination had to mean something) but can she be the Katniss Everdeen that we all know and love reading about?

To be honest, I'm sort of on the no side of the fence.  Of course I won't judge until I see the trailer, but she isn't the Katniss I pictured.  But we all know how the movie making industry can completely change how a person looks in a movie, so I suppose that can all be edited.  Her lack of olive skin, dark hair, etc can be magically modified.  It's unfortunate that  they couldn't find an actress who already fits the profile for Katniss though.

The fans of the popular trilogy are split, some are for Jennifer playing Katniss but others are against  it.
  • Using a white actress to play a role that she needs to look ethnic for? So they change her to look the way she should have looked in the first place had they done the decent thing and not called for specifically “Caucasian” actresses. I don’t think the people producing/directing this movie have ever read the books. If they had, they would have known what an uproar this would cause.
  • I'm glad they went with her. Ultimately I just hope they don't try to film this to appeal to the Twilight crowd. For the love of all that is holy, please put some time and effort into this movie!
  • She kind of is too old though. The disturbing part of the Hunger Games is that it’s children killing children. Not nearly as effective when it looks like college kids killing college kids.
  • As a true fan of the books I’m scared they are going to ruin these like they ruined Twilight. I loved the Twilight books, but now I can’t read them without hearing the terrible soundtrack or seeing Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart attempt to emote.

A long casting search has officially come to an end. After weeks and months of feverish speculation over which young actress would land the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen, Lionsgate Entertainment has exclusively confirmed to MTV News that the “Winter’s Bone” actress has officially signed on for the lead role in “The Hunger Games,” director Gary Ross’ adaptation of the fan-favorite novel series from writer Suzanne Collins.

“Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave,” Collins said of the casting in an official statement. “I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.”

“I’m so excited work with Jen and see her bring this character to life,” added Ross. “Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.”

Lawrence stars in “The Hunger Games” as Katniss Everdeen, a self-sufficient 16-year-old who lives in District 12, one of the poorer districts in the nation of Panem, what used to be known as North America before its utter destruction several years earlier. Katniss becomes a participant in the Hunger Games, an annual televised tournament where one boy and one girl from each of the nation’s twelve districts must fight to the death until only one competitor, or “tribute,” is left standing.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 23, 2012.   - Hollywood Crush

Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) will direct the adaptation, and now the next big role to be filled in the film is that of the lead male character Peeta. Josh Hutcherson and Alex Pettyfer have been mentioned as contenders and apparently "Weeds" star Hunter Parrish just recently had his name thrown into the mix too. This project is certainly a hot commodity in Hollywood right now, and you can bet we'll be hearing plenty more news as this project develops. I know some of you aren't too happy with Lawrence's casting, but the girl has talent, so let's cut her a break and see what she'll bring the the table. The Hunger Games will hit theaters on March 23rd 2012. Sound good?  - Firstshowing.net

The fact that Jennifer Lawrence can act is already a step up from the Twilight movies.  I'm very curious to see how Lionsgate is goin to pull this off.  Like I said, I wont judge until I see some sort of a trailer, until then, I'm supporting the movie!

And to those of you who say “True fans don’t care as long as yadda yadda”.  That’s straight up bullshit and you know it.  The fans want the movie to be just as good as the book, because they care.

  1. I agree, acting ability is a very important quality. And that we shouldn't judge until we see the trailer. However, I don't think beauty is that important of a quality for Katniss it's her strength that is her most vibrant quality. And the whole not choosing someone that fits Katniss better physically is annoying but what can we do about it?

    But great post!!
