By the time you read this I'll be dead by Julie Anne Peters

From the web: Daelyn Rice is broken beyond repair, and after a string of botched suicide attempts, she's determined to get her death right. She starts visiting a website for "completers"- www.through-the-light .com. While she's on the site, Daelyn blogs about her life, uncovering a history of bullying that goes back to kindergarten. When she's not on the Web, Daelyn's at her private school, where she's known as the freak who doesn't talk.
Then, a boy named Santana begins to sit with her after school while she's waiting to for her parents to pick her up. Even though she's made it clear that she wants to be left alone, Santana won't give up. And it's too late for Daelyn to be letting people into her life. Isn't it?National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters shines a light on how bullying can push young people to the very edge.

For starters, this isn't the average teen fiction novel.  Julie Anne Peters covers some very serious issues and in the progress writes an amazing novel.  Daelyn is not the typical teen, she has been through so much in her life and finnally decides she dosen't want to go on, after a string of suicide attempts.  But then while she waits for her parents to pick her up from school a boy named Santana starts sitting beside her even though she's made it clear that she would rather be left alone.  This happens after Daelyn has made her decision and she dosen't want to let people into her life since it's so close to ending but Santana still manages a way to creep into her life.  Daelyn starts visiting a website named www.through-the-light .com.  (which does not exist, I checked).  While on the site she begins to blog about the reasons why she has made the choice to commit suicide.  The reasons are mostly varied types of bullying that go all the way back to kindergarten.

Once I flipped open the first page and started reading about Daelyn's horrible experiences, I never stopped until the last page.  I think Daelyn's is someone who lives inside each and every one of us, though some of us don't let her control us that much.  I'd also like to say that while I read the book I agreed with what Daelyn was thinking the whole time including killing herself.  Why should she have to endure such a horrible life?  But as the plot thickened and Santana wasn't a small character anymore I found myself hoping that she wouldn't commit sucide.  I'm not going to overanalyze the book and say the chracter developpement was amazing (which it was) and so on because that wouldn't be th point of it.

The story really captivates what so many off us are going through and Daelyn is just an example.  The way Daelyn's kept making jokes (in her thoughts) about her everyday battles even though she was planning to commit sucide made her a realistic character.  It isn't really easy to review such a serious book, so I'll leave you with this: I'm just going to say that this was an amazing book and I might even have to consider it one of my favorites.  It's really something I think each and every one of us should read.  And of course this book deserves the Moody seal of approval.

The book wont be released until 2010 but here is Julie Anne Peter's wesbite for more information:  http://www.julieannepeters.com/

  5. I honestly was very disappointed in the book-especially the ending. Does she or doesn't she? IMO, 13 Reasons Why is a much better book on teen suicide, rumors, bullying, sexual assault, etc.

  6. I just finished reading this book, and it really made me realize how some people may feel and think. Without even knowing it, someone close or acquainted can be waiting to go through the light.

  7. I literally just finished reading this book. It was a fantastic insight on what goes through peoples minds when they're planning suicide. I could kinda relate to Daelyn me not being a very skinny person. Even so to read about what she went through was horrifying. This book made me want to cry and laugh all at the same time. I also really loved Santana. I'm just a bit confused on the ending. Did she or didn't she kill herself. A fanomanal book, loved every second of it!!

  8. I was confused at the ending too-I guess it's just one of those books where the author purposely leaves you hanging in order for the reader to come up with their own conclusion. Personally, I don't believe that she went through with the suicide, mainly because she deleted her Through The Light account(Remember, when you delete your account there, you can never come back.) I took the account-deleting as a sign of defiance against suicide.

  9. This book was amazing! And I can resepect the ending, because I love endings that make you think, but I really woould have loved to see what happened to Santana and Emily and Daelyn. This book was beautiful, and I absolutly love how day 5 repeats it self, and this allows her to live another day, and on that last day- day one- she reaches out to Emily and finally has something worth speaking for. She allows Santana to get close to her, and she stands up for herself like shes never done. Her last day was so important and touching, and its really what gives Dealyn a reason to live, and me hope that she doesn't kill herself. AMAZING BOOK <3
